HOST: SUMIT SWAMI
After failed attempts in Subway sandwich artistry, taxi driving and even delivery jobs, Sumit Swami soon realized he would not make it in the cutthroat service industry, so he started comedy as a second career. Sumit has taken the North Eastern Ontario comedy scene by storm. He has performed at many sold-out shows in Timmins and Sudbury alongside well-known comedians such as Mike Bullard and Pete Zedlacker. Being born and raised in India, Sumit has been described as having a unique way of looking at Canada and Canadians. He is also a regular comedic guest on like The Unethical and Private Dicks podcasts. Sumit’s focus is to make Canadians laugh with his entertaining tales of being an immigrant!
Emcee: RONNIE EDWARDS
Irrepressible English-born, Jamaican-bred Canadian jester Ronnie Edwards can make a crowd howl without opening his mouth. But when he does open his mouth, he draws his high-flying, street-wise humour from so many sources that it’s impossible to pin him down. His wide-eyed, good-natured schtick is clean, cerebral and cutting-edge cool.
This “Hurricane of Comedy” recently drew 900,000 Canadian viewers on the premier primetime episode of CBC TV’s “COMICS!”. In fact, the episode was such a ratings smash, it helped propel the series into its current prime time slot. In fact, “the show may have been the highest-rated entertainment show ever by a black performer in Canada”, according to producer Joe Bodolai.
Ronnie also recently starred in the CBC’s one-hour black comedy special “Thick & Thin”, the Comedy Network’s “Comedy Now”, and co-hosted the 1998 Gemini Awards on CBC.
Ronnie Edwards brings a message of pure fun to his stand-up comedy and acting. A former railway porter and reggae musician who sold all his musical equipment to get into comedy, he has kept audiences “feeling irie” for nearly 15 years. His stage act is a high-energy combination of physical comedy, impressions and observations from his West Indian background, and even some music. It’s never hostile, aggressive, or mean-spirited. Along the way, he has opened for Anita Baker and The Wailers, acted in the television series Alfred Hitchcock Presents and Night Heat, and headlined at the People’s Comedy Festival in Toronto.
In the UK, building on his vast experience of playing most of the major venues in Canada, America and the Caribbean, Ronnie is featuring at The Comedy Store and Jongleurs and is now seeking to bring his exuberant and individual comedy to many other venues.
Ronnie’s philosophy was summed up in a recent magazine article, when he said, “I love life. I love the look on people’s faces when they’re in that good belly laugh… When they leave the club, I want people to skip out!”
“A master of zany, rapid-fire and sophisticated physical comedy. He’s generous and open with crowds, cracking them up with a vast arsenal of wordplay, sight gags and impressions designed to elevate the human spirit.” – Now Magazine
Headliner: Kenny Robinson
“The Fabulous Kenny Robinson” is a living legend on the Canadian Comedy scene.
Winner of the Phil Hartman Award, Kenny’s irreverent, socially conscience, intelligent, opinionated and profane style of comedy has made him a fixture and favourite with comedy clubs, festivals, swingers conventions, radio, and television
audiences for over 3 decades. Raunchy, energetic, sharp witted, and sharp dressed; Kenny Robinson is a one of a kind act. Not for the weak of heart or narrow minded. Kenny assaults your sensibilities and funny bone with unspoken truths. The Winnipeg born, Chicago bred Robinson has hosted The Gemini Awards and was twice nominated for his writing and performance in his ground breaking one hour special “Thick and Thin” on the CBC.
Kenny has earned accolades as the creator, writer, producer and host of the edgy late night series”After Hours with Kenny Robinson” on The Comedy Network. It was on this show that Leslie Jones of SNL and Kevin Hart first had the opportunity to perform sketch comedy.
His episode of the CBC’s Comics has been referred by the Toronto Star as “One of the few episodes that still stand with the test of time.” Robinson has toured across North America, performed in Johannesburg, South Africa and taped an episode of PARAMOUNTS WORLD STAND UP for television in the UK.
Kenny’s greatest legacy may well be his creation of The Nubian Disciples Of Pryor All Black Revue. THE NUBIAN show is a monthly showcase of comedians of colour, which has been one of the most exciting and successful nights of Comedy in Canada since 1995. This showcase has mentored, and been a spotlight for such comics as Russell Peters, Jean Paul, Trey Anthony, Trixx, Ron Josol, and countless others.
For 2 years he was one of the co hosts of “The Morning Rush” on Flow 93.5fm, Canada’s first black owned hip hop radio station. As an actor Kenny has appeared in such films as “Third Miracle” with Ed Harris, “Down To Earth” with Chris Rock, Clement Virgo’s “Love comes Down”, and David Sutherland’s “Love, Sex, and Eating the Bones.” Robinson has appeared on the CBC’s “Royal Canadian Air Farce”, Showtime’s “Soul Food”, and has a wide fan base from his reoccurring roles as “Jelly Bean” on PAX series “Doc”, starring Billy Ray Cyrus, and as “Mickey” on the teen fave “Radio Free Roscoe” on the “Noggin’ Network.
Whether the audience looks for his cutting observational perspectives, political, sexual or what comes up at the moment, Kenny’s professional attitude and love for comedy will always deliver!
