About Simon:

Simon Rakoff has been a comedian since 1978. His act is well crafted and thought provoking delivered with the smoothness of a veteran and the enthusiasm of a newcomer. He has made audiences laugh across Canada from Newfoundland to Vancouver Island. A top headliner, Simon’s quick mind and engaging personality also make him a popular MC at clubs, corporate and charity events. A favourite at comedy festivals, Simon has performed at Montreal’s Just For Laughs, Halifax Ha!, The Winnipeg Comedy Festival and many others.

On television, Simon has appeared on innumerable Canadian shows and had his own special on CBC. He also provided humorous commentary on the local Toronto news. He is also a frequent voice on national radio on shows including The Debaters, Madly Off In All Directions , Definitely Not The Opera and As It Happens.

Simon is also a much sought after writer and has added his talent to Canada’s sitcoms, sketch and panel shows.

About Thomas:

Winner of the 2016 Windsor Comedy Fest, and featured on CBC radio’s Laugh Out Loud, Thomas Calnan has been performing stand-up for over ten years and has entertained literally dozens of people across Ontario, and one weirdo in Montreal. He has been described as ‘somewhat amusing’ and ‘not terrible’ by people he has talked to after shows. He was described as ‘hilarious’ and ‘the most under-rated comic ever’ by a producer he got drunk one night.

Thomas Calnan is a storyteller, a former UFO abductee, a high ranking member of the Illuminati, and the former Prime Minister of Dublin. First and foremost, though – he considers himself a truth teller.

Through his steady work ethic, great writing, and a seemingly unending supply of compromising photographs of every comedy producer in Canada, Thomas is definitely someone you can expect to hear more about in the future. Or more likely he’ll get frustrated and decide he’s going to be a competitive eater or some other stupid shit.

About this event

The Story:

What’s the buzz? The first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be produced for the professional stage, Jesus Christ Superstar has wowed audiences for over 50 years. A timeless work, the rock opera is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally known series of events but seen, unusually, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. Loosely based on the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, Superstar follows the last week of Jesus Christ’s life. The story, told entirely through song, explores the personal relationships and struggles between Jesus, Judas, Mary Magdalene, his disciples, his followers and the Roman Empire.

The iconic 1970s rock score contains such well-known numbers as “Superstar,” “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” and “Gethsemane.” A true global phenomenon and perfect pick for schools, community theaters and professionals alike, Superstar continues to touch new generations of audiences and performers.

About this event

The Story:

Bubba’s extra-curricular activities, without exception, appear to be illegal. They run the gamut from cash prize bingo, to a rum distillery, to off-track betting. You name it, Bubba is doing it. Arriving at the hotel is Beatrice Rutherford-Smythe (The epitome of the New England blue bloods) and her daughter Traci, to check out the hotel for Traci’s wedding. They have an appointment with Madame Coco, the hotel’s wedding planner, who unfortunately has eloped. The only staff member who knows anything about weddins is Uncle Bubba, who, coerced by Audrina, now has to spend the rest of the play, alternating between himself and Madame Coco.

Two other guests are checking in today. Traci’s fiance, Peter Mudd, and a mysterious Douglas DuPont. Through a mix up of room numbers, a sweries of mistaken identities ensues. Candy, the hotel receptionist is bribed by Beatrice to flirt with Peter, but ends up with Douglas. Douglas, who is actually an innocent travel writer for a destination wedding publication, is mistaken for a federal agent from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Candy’s report to Beatrice introduces a roller coaster of events creating an on again-off again wedding.

In the midest of all this mayhem,Bubba and Beatrice appear to be falling in love. Peter and Traci are reconciled (Several times), and Audrina and Douglas find they have a strong attraction for each other. Throughout the play though, one question remains unanswered: Is it true love or is it the mystique of ‘Sandy Toes & Salty Kisses’ at the Lovers’ Landing Beach Hotel?

The Shows:

College Letters by Dailyn Rodriguez

In a college dorm room, a self-described cynic and an “air head” with a seemingly perfect life battle over the mail, love, and nearly everything else. It’s a miracle they haven’t killed each other — but even more miraculous, they become best friends.

Strawberry Fields by Kevin Brofsky

Edith Warren of Plant City, Florida, meets Vera Samuels, famous New York daytime television talk show hostess, in a diner to discuss an interview. Edith became the subject of controversy when her son was killed in a strawberry field, apparently a bias murder because he was gay. Edith has agreed to the interview, but is having second thoughts due to the finger pointing she has experienced, which includes the waitress serving them this day. Vera has to convince her to go on television and can only do that by revealing something personal and career damaging about her own life.

Dear Mrs. Martin by Kate Aspengren

Barbara Martin is surprised when her new cleaning woman, Gloria, begins writing her personal notes and stories about her son or about her trips to her psychic and her belief in an afterlife. Barbara gets caught up in the letter writing and a warm friendship develops between these two women from different social and economic spheres. When Barbara’s husband dies unexpectedly, it is Gloria who is able to provide support and understanding. Told through Barbara’s and Gloria’s letters, Dear Mrs. Martin is a play about friendship, family, grief and hope.
